Within Temptation vs Q-Tip - Ice Queen & Stop [Full Mix]
Within Temptation - Ice Queen
Q-Tip - Breath & Stop [acapella]
Q-Tip - Breath & Stop [drums only]

In May 2003, DMC produced a mash-up of Michael Jackson's Don't Stop Till You Get Enough and Q-Tip's Breathe & Stop. (Exactly 2½ years later, Carty makes his debut on the DMC CD's with the Rachel Stevens vs Adam Ant mash-up.) In April 2006, at a Dutch computer company's games party, the Jacko vs Q-Tip two-tracker was blaring from the sound system. What a mix!!

A quick chat about that track resulted in Carty's need to use the former A Tribe Called Quest rapper's vocal, in a new mix. He wanted something with a Dutch flavour and turned to his then 'better half' for suggestions...(Let's not mention which tracks ended up on the cutting room floor!).

The Dutch Goth rockers, Within Temptation, have been stealing air time on the Dutch music TV channels with their powerful Ice Queen single, so this seemed the best place to start. After having some serious timing issues with the Q-Tip acapella (some nut has really screwed that up!), and applying some emergency surgery, everything was beginning to fall into place. The result is the 7 minutes and 14 second mix which takes pride of place as track one on this WTF Volume 4 compilation.

After sending a copy of the mix to the computer company's employees it was suggested that it be sent into the Friday afternoon mix (vrijdagmiddagmix) slot on the Dutch national radio station 3FM. Seeing as they only accept mixes under 4 minutes for inclusion in the program, some serious editing would have had to take place. (Carty's reputation for long mixes is something he seems to be stuck with, so how was heto chop this mix in half?).

It must be said, it was painful, and a four minute edit was sent in to 3FM DJ Paul Rabbering and the mix was played on his RabRadio show on Friday 18th May 2007.

(For real!)

Kosheen - Overkill [acapella]

An Ant fan called Graham Politt (a.k.a. GG) suggested Carty enter a remix competition run by Kosheen's web site (www.kosheen.com).

Only Kosheen's acapella has been used from the original. The rest is all Carty, as using samples was not allowed for the competition. Spoilsports!

The original version appears on their album Damage. (Carty didn't win.)

Perez Prado - Mambo #5
Fun Boy 3 & Banarama - It Ain't What You Do [drums]
Christina Aguilera - Candyman
Abigail Mead - Full Metal Jacket
Andrews Sisters - Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (Of Company B)
Lou Bega - Mambo #5
Geoffrey Sumner - Stereo Sound Sampler [1958 LP]
Art Of Noise - The Army Now [intro sample]

An Ant fan called Brian Collins (a.k.a. Sparky) suggested Carty do something with Christina Aguilera's Candyman track. As you can see from the list above, there's quite a lot of source material here. He's have always thought that the Fun Boy 3 drums would go with Lou Bega's Mambo #5 and it seemed a good place to start after Christina's track has a similar beat. The US Marine chant from Full Metal Jacket also seems an influence to Ms. Aguilera.

This mix begins with the "...Bugle Boy" horn section from the Star Sisters. They are a Dutch trio who sang the vocals on the intros and outros of the Stars On 45 singles from the 80's. It's from a medley of war time classics called, ironically, Stars On 45.

Carty chose to use the Perez Prado original of the Mambo #5 horns as it has an older edge which fits in with the Andrews Sisters' sound. Right at the end of the mix is an Art Of Noise sample from their The Army Now track. It's a bit cheeky as they sampled the Andrews Sisters in the first place!

And finally, tucked away with the Perez Prado horns are some very, very rare samples from a 1958 stereo sampler LP. You're probably familiar with the "This is a journey into sound" sample. Well Carty has added some gems from that same recording never heard before. (Not that you care)

A radio edit mix was sent to Dutch station 3FM, however, Ms. Aguilera's track was not on their playlist and was therefore not suitable for their target audience.

Gary Glitter - Rock 'n' Roll (Part 2)
Right Said Fred - Deeply Dippy
The Turtles - Happy Together
Britney Spears - Ooh Ooh Baby

No website notes to carry over from the Dutch domain, so let's pick Carty's memory banks:

"Er, thanks! I really don't remember how the idea for this mix came about, but if you listen to Britney's original Ooh Ooh Baby, it sounded like a cross between Gary Glitter's Rock 'n' Roll and The Turtles' Happy Together. So it seemed natural to try them out!"

"For some reason, Deeply Dippy found its way into the mix, and it has to be said, it worked brilliantly. One this mix was concluded, I toyed around the idea of taking Britney out of the mix and making it a Happy Together remix, but more of that below."

"As I mentioned in the Britney Spears notes above, this remix was offshoot of Ooh Ooh Baby [Ninja Remix], as this focuses on The Turtles' song more. There's not more I can really add as my memory's gone and the mix really does speak for itself, as it's bloody good!"

Having been influenced by such sample-based records as Pump Up The Volume by M|A|R|R|S, Beat Dis by Bomb The Bass, Bass (How Low Can You Go) by Simon Harris, Check This Out by L.A. Mix, Jack To The Sound Of The Underground by Hithouse, Paid In Full [Coldcut Remix] by Eric B & Rakim and many, many more, Carty always fancied having a bash at his own track.

Over the past ten years he has built up an impressive database of original samples, breaks, beats and scratches. Some of which feature here in their original form.

To accompany Carty's original version, he also produced an edited version, a bassless one, and a Cartypella, revealing all those samples in their rawest form. Awesome.

7. Tina Turner - Disco Inferno [Carty Instrumental]

Tina Turner - Disco Inferno

This was a late addition to this compilation and therefore had no site notes, so over to Carty for the memory game:

"Near the Dutch town of Nijmegen, where I lived at the time, was a band called Belgrave. they played mainly funk, soul and pop to local audiences. Their lead singer was called Joanne Belgrave (hence the name), and she was entering a singing competition and chose Disco Inferno as her song. I was asked to produce the backing music."

"This could have been simple, as I have many original Motown backing tracks, so I sent over The Trammps version. Sadly it was in the wrong key for Joanne, as she favoured the Tina Turner cover version. The problem was, there was no instrumental in the same key as Tina's. So I had to painstakingly edit her single version, using the parts with no singing, and make a whole song out of it."

"Needless to say, I managed to pull it off, apart from the middle eight, which could be disguised by Joanne's vocals as it was similar sounding to Tina's."

"The result was added here to help close the WTF series off."

Track one on this disc is the 07:14 original mix. For Carty to send it off to Dutch radio staion 3FM, it could be no longer than four minutes! So some drastic editing had to take place, and this is the result, which was played on air to much praise from listeners.
